Jacquie van Ierssel

Dr. Jacquie van Ierssel has over 25 years of professional experience as a clinician, researcher, and educator in health sciences. She is a CAMPT-Certified Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Manual and Musculoskeletal Physiotherapists (FCAMPT) and Sport Physiotherapy Canada (SPC) Diploma holder. Her research focuses on two main areas: (1) improving clinical decision-making related to concussion recovery and return to sport; and (2) harnessing the power of technology to bridge gap between research and patient-centred care. As a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Postdoctoral Fellow at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute, Jacquie developed an innovative dual-task balance test that better identifies balance problems than the current standard. Her research has been adopted into clinical practice, informed industry programs of care, received international recognition (International Brain Injury Association), and has been published in high impact journals. She has presented on concussion at numerous conferences, scientific meetings, on broadcast interviews, and has won clinical teaching awards. As a committee member of the 6th International Consensus on Concussion, Jacquie contributed to the development of standardized concussion assessment tools, including the SCAT6™, Child SCAT6™, SCOAT6™, Child SCOAT6™, and CRT6™ that translate research into actionable practice. She has also held leadership positions on national pediatric and adult concussion guidelines and on national professional committees. As a Clinical Research Educator for the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, Jacquie is currently co-developing competency-based training for researchers to increase clinical trial capacity in Canada. She has previously taught undergraduate and graduate students as a Part-time Professor at the University of Ottawa, and Adjunct Lecturer and Clinical Supervisor at the University of Toronto.
